A sphenoid sinus fungus ball is a collection of fungal material within one of the deeper sinuses behind the nose. Symptoms may include headache and drainage at the back of the nose, but these symptoms can have many other causes.

How is it diagnosed?

Symptoms alone cannot establish the diagnosis. Assessment may include nasal endoscopy and a CT scan. MRI may be needed when the examination or imaging raises additional concerns.

How is it treated?

Treatment commonly involves endoscopic surgery to remove the fungal material and allow drainage. Laboratory examination of the removed material helps confirm the diagnosis. Follow-up is tailored to each patient.

A persistent headache does not necessarily indicate sinus disease. An appropriate medical assessment is essential to identify its cause.
